Exhibition Swarm Bridge Gallery

For the last two years the work of Peter  Macapia and his office, labDORA, has involved experimentation with material and computational processes.  Collectively titled “Dirty Geometry,” these architectural, urban, structural and spatial manifolds are generated through a study of geometrical patterns and systems.  “Swarm” describes these systems’ collective intelligence, which emerges from the execution of simple processes and rules, an approach that explores the relations between material self-organization and computational algorithms.  The installation uses advanced rapid prototyping driven by computational tools developed specifically for this work; it consists of 13 models and 180 genetic studies “floating” in the form of a swarm cloud.  Each model begins as a study of transformations about entities called “singularities” that organize and embody systems undergoing dynamic change.  Trajectories of genetic mutation and evolution define the continuity between the different models and their constellation of studies.

Peter Macapia is a designer, artist and founder of labDORA, the Design Office for Research and Architecture, which has offices in New York and Paris.  His architectural projects and essays on architecture, geometry, methodology, computation, power and space have been published and exhibited internationally (Log Magazine, Computational Archiectures (forthcoming), Maison Rouge Paris, Nous Gallery London).  Peter holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University and has taught at Columbia, Pratt, l’ESA in Paris and SciArc.  His current project is a Dirty Geometry Pavilion for Performa 11, the fourth iteration of the International Biennial of Performance Art in New York.
